People's Great Hall of Chongqing

Chongqing People's Great Hall is another landmark building of this municipality. Began on June in 1951 and completed in April 1954, the hall is designed in the traditional symmetrical and beautiful proportioned style of Ming and Qing dynasties' palaces.

Covering a total area of 66,000 square meters, the people’s hall is a large complex consisting of three parts: the great hall, the north wing and the south wing on each side of the hall (an east wing was added to it in 1986), and the perilous archway by the street. The auditorium is 65 meters high and has a seating capacity of 4200.

Chongqing People's Hall is a symmetric building, with its dome resembling that of the Temple of Heaven and its front of the Tiananmen in Beijing. It has long been hailed as a masterpiece of oriental structure. And History of Comparative Architecture, an authoritative book on architecture published in 1987, rated the hall as one of the 43 representative Chinese structures.
