transportation

Airplane

Kunming Wujiaba International Airport is located 7 kilometers southwest of Kunming city. It is one of the most important and busiest international airports in China as well as the hub airport in South-West China.

Currently the airport has already opened 150 internal airlines, and 20 international airlines to Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, New Delhi, Seoul, Tokyo, Rangoon and etc. There are also daily flights to Hong Kong and Macau as well as over 56 of China’s major cities. In addition, the airport also services direct flights to most sizeable cities in Yunnan including Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, Jinghong in Xishuangbanna, and others.

A taxi between the city center and the airport will cost 20 - 30 RMB and should take 20 - 40 minutes (possibly more during heavy traffic.) Civil aviation buses also make the commute and should cost 15 - 20 RMB. In addition, public buses No. 52, 67, and 78 serve the area for 1 RMB per person (2 RMB if air-conditioned) but will almost definitely take more time to arrive than a taxi will.

Railway
Kunming has four railway stations, namely Kunming North Railway Station, Kunming Railway Station, Kunming East Railway Station, and Kunming West Railway Station. The trains lead to nearly all major cities in the country and cross over the boundary to reach Hanoii.

Kunming Railway Station, also known as Nanyao Railway Station, is the main railway station in Kunming. It is 4 kilometers from the center of the city. This station is more useful to travelers because most outbound trains depart from here. Trains to Dali, Yuxi etc., operate daily.

Second is the North Railway Station, about three kilometers north of the city center. This station is important for tourists who plan to travel to Vietnam for here you can make a trip further to Hanoi.

Train tickets can be booked in most hotels in Kunming or you can book tickets 7 days prior to your departure at the Ticket Booking Office open from 8 am to 5:30 pm.

Kind Notice: It is impossible to get your Vietnam Visa in Kunming. So, you must obtain your Vietnam visa in Guangzhou, Beijing, or other major city in advance if you are planning a trip to Vietnam.

Bus

There are over 50 bus lines that zigzag throughout almost every section in Kunming. It usually costs a mere 1 RMB to take a public bus. Most of the buses are Automated Collection Bus, so you need to prepare enough charge before you get on the bus. The morning class bus is general at 6:00-6:30; the last bus is at 22:00-22:30. Therefore city buses are not ideal after big shopping sessions - a taxi is probably the wiser choice.

Taxi
Taxis are quite plentiful in Kunming - over 6000 taxis roam the city streets. The taxies in Kunming are mainly Santana and Jetta. 8 RMB is charged for the first 3 kilometers and after that 1.8 RMB is added for each additional kilometer. After 10:00 P.M., the start price is 9.6 Yuan, 2.7 Yuan/ kilometer. The start price of Xiali is 7 Yuan within 3 kilometers, later 1.6 Yuan/ kilometer. After 10:00 P.M., the start price is 9.6 Yuan, 2.4 dollars/ kilometer. Fares also increase while sitting in traffic, so taking taxis during rush hour may cost a bit more if there is excessive traffic.

Besides, most taxis in Kunming are now charging a 1 RMB "fuel surcharge" that is proudly displayed on the passenger-side dash of every taxi.
