Dining in Luoyang is quite an enjoyable experience. Various kinds of local dishes, including Water Banquet, Yan Cai and others which use the famous Yellow River carp together with uniquely flavored soups that will satisfy your taste buds.

Carp
Carp is arguably the most beloved dish in Luoyang. It is not only delicious in taste but also is appealing in appearance. It is said that in the golden olden days of Luoyang, when the capital was swathed in mystery and paved with gold, the fish itself could cost as much as a whole live ox! The dish itself is considered as a great delicacy in these parts, beloved for its tender flesh, nutritional benefits and the stylish design of each dish.

The ideal carp dish is designed with subtle skill. The carp, with its head held high above the plate, is masterfully placed, seeming to be leaping over the cabbage "gorge" at the side of the plate, a symbol of competitive spirit. The dish also is known in these parts as "Carp Leaping over the Gorge" (Liyu tiaolongmen).

 Water Banquet
The Luoyang Water Banquet (shuixi) is not simply a drinking test, but a local custom that has been running for over a thousand years.

There are two reasons why the banquet has its name. The main reason is that, unlike most meal customs in China, the dishes served in this banquet are brought one after another, like flowing water. The second reason is that around one third of the dishes served are soup or semi-soup ones.

The Luoyang Water Banquet includes 24 different soups. They are mainly characterized by sour and spicy flavor and are served according to a very strict order. The dishes of water banquet are rated according to the quality of the materials and cooking skills, rather than the rarity and high cost of the materials. The high-grade feast includes delicacies from land and sea, while the ordinary feast consists mainly of two chickens.

Zhangji Roast Chicken
Zhangji Roast Chicken (Zhangji kaoji) has long been a household course in the Luoyang area, never quite as famous as its duck rivals, but a tasty dish nonetheless.

This version of the traditional roast chicken was allegedly first created through a secret recipe by a man with the surname Zhang. Nowadays this dish has become a popular dish and snack food for locals and travelers alike.

shopping

Although not the capital, there are many specialties that can be found in Luoyang. The most famous would have to be the peonies that are found all over the place, flowers that are also the symbol of the city. For those after handicrafts the copied Tang Dynasty three-color glazed pottery, that can be found in many places in Luoyang and has a history of as long as 1,000 years, is not to be missed. For tea connoisseurs, a taste of the pure and crisp Xinyang tea should not be missed, made from leaves of some of China's most unsullied land.

There are many shopping venues in the city. Shanghai Market Pedestrian Street in Jian Xi District is the place where fashionable clothes are sold. Wangcheng Park located on the middle Zhong Zhou Road is the best place to buy tourist souvenirs such as Tang Tri-colors, peony paintings and bronze wares. Nan Chang Road in Jian Xi District is the most beautiful avenue in Luoyang, offering a variety of things you may need.

Palace Lantern
Luoyang Palace Lanterns were developed in the Eastern Han Dynasty and becamepopular in the Tang Dynasty. They were first used in royal court only. The lanterns aremade with high craftsmanship, and they have many kinds. The most commonly seen lanterns are white square, red gauze round lantern, hexagonal dragon-head lantern, and merry-go-round.

Tang Dynasty Three-color Glazed Pottery
The Tang Dynasty three-color glazed pottery (Tangsancai) is the crystallization of a highly developed art, which is already over ten millennia old.

Although the pottery was so named because of its three major colors - red, green and yellow, some other colors can still be seen, such as white, black, blue and purple, helping it secure its place as one of the most famous specialties in China.

The pottery work on display around Luoyang, mainly featuring horse, camel and human figures, are all modeled in a smooth style and bear a sort of a metallic luster thanks to the application of the unique glazing technique.

The Peonies
Luoyang is the hometown of the peony. Throughout the centuries, numerous poets have painted poems and poetic prose glorifying it. Although there has never been a nation-wide official survey as to which flower should be voted the national one, the peony is generally acknowledged to be China's best. The peony, over 90 in species by color and shape, is the symbol of wealth for Chinese people, which is the main reason why these pretty flowers frequently appear on Chinese embroidery work and on the smooth qipao, the popular Chinese dresses.

It has long been the custom of the local folks to admire the peony during springtime, which is in full bloom in April. As a result, the locals of Luoyang set up a Peony Festival every year, from April 15 to April 25, during which time lantern, film and literary works about it are all displayed for people to appreciate. In the past few years the festival has become more and more popular and it is well worth going to see. The best of the peonies during this time can be found in the Wancheng Park.

Xinyang Tea
Xinyang, a small town located in the mountainous region not far from the city of Luoyang, is well-known for its perennial mist veiling the mountains, which is indispensable for the growth of tea of the best kind.

With the unpolluted air and water creating an almost perfect environment, tea here can be harvested three times a year, thus forming a sharp contrast with the common practice of the annual tea leaves collection across China. Among the three batches, the autumn brew is usually the best.

entertainment

Luoyang is not the most exciting of places for those after a bit of light relief, but this is not such a problem since most travelers here are only coming for the sights and historical ambience.

Nightlife is limited and, apart from spending your time drinking in pleasant restaurants about town, most of the clubs and pubs are situated in the hotels. Some of the outdoor restaurants near to the railway station, on Jinguyuan Lu, serve a nice, and cheap, draught beer.

The Chinese do somehow manage to enjoy themselves here though, satisfied by their versions of ultra-modern entertainment (some of which are blasphemously housed in a few of the ancient constructions).

The Eight Immortals Palace on Luolong Lu is another replica of Disneyland (making use of the famous Chinese mythology featuring eight immortals), which applies modern laser and sound facilities to make entrants feel as if they were contemporaries of the immortals.

The Laser shooting city on Shachang Xilu is another interesting place, a simulated battle field, like the real thing excepting that your enemy are either strangers or friends and that you use a laser rifle in place of a real one.

highlights

Luoyang Peony Festival

“The peony of Luoyang is the most beautiful under heaven”, as the saying goes. The peony, the emblem flower of Luoyang, is lauded as “queen of flowers with ethereal color and celestial fragrance.” Since the Tang Dynasty no Chinese city has been able to rival Luoyang in growing peonies. Growing the peony and marveling at it has, in fact, long been a local obsession. Of the 500,000 peony shrubs in 350-odd strains that are cultivated in Luoyang, the yaohuang (Yao’s yellow peony) and weizi (Wei’s purple peony) are the “king” and “queen” of all peonies.

The first Luoyang Peony Festival took place on April 15-25 in 1983. Since then it has become a major annual event.
