Nanjing, meaning South Capital, is the capital of Jiangsu Province. With a city history of about 2,500 years, Nanjing is regarded as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals in China together with Beijing, Xi’an and Luoyang. Ten dynasties established capital cities in Nanjing, leaving rich historic and cultural heritage. At present, Nanjing is the second largest commercial center in the East China region as well as one of the four central cities along the Yangtze River Valley. It has also served as a national hub of education, research, transportation and tourism throughout history.

Nanjing Cuisine:

Nanjing cuisine is a shining school of Jiangsu cuisine (also Huaiyang Cuisine or Su Cuisine), which is one of the Eight Chinese Cuisines. Traditional Nanjing cuisine is known as Jing Su cuisine and is notable for its emphasis on presenting the original flavors of the ingredients used, careful selection of materials, attractive color and fine cutting technique. Nanjing dishes are traditionally bright in color and use only a moderate amount of seasoning but a significant amount of oil. It wins over many specifically by its freshness, fragrance, crispness and tenderness. Owing to the profound historical and cultural accumulation in this city, nearly all the Nanjing cuisines have their own stories behind them. So, tasting Nanjing cuisine is also an exciting experience of savoring Nanjing culture and history.

Nanjing Steamed Duck
As early as 1910, the Nanjing steamed Duck cutlet was awarded a national award by the Qing government and is now popular in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. This dish is characterized by its appetizing appearance and tender and delicate taste.
 
The cooking process involves steeping, boiling, braising and baking the duck. The best places to taste this are the snack bars around the ConfuciusTemple area of the city.
 
Salted Nanjing Duck 
As a special local product of great reputation, the salted Nanjing duck has a long history of more than one thousand years. With white skin, fat but not greasy meat and good taste, it is appetizing, crisp and delicate, which forms its characteristics. Salted duck can be easily found in most restaurants and the best time to eat it is the August when the duck is seasoned with Osmathus flowers and has a delicate flavor. The best place to sample this dish is in the WanQingLouRestaurant in the south of the city.
 
Nanjing Snacks
Well-known all over the country, Nanjing's snacks enjoyed a long history. It is also called Jinling Snacks or Qinhuai Snacks. The Temple of Confucius is the origin of Nanjing's snacks and also the place where most of the snacks with a district local flavor are to be found.

In Nanjing, the prosperous business zones are mainly scattered in Hunan Road, Xinjiekou, South Taiping Road and Fuzimiao area.

 
A large variety of handcrafts are sold in Nanjing. Among them the most famous are Cloud Brocade (Yunjing), Rain Flower Stone (Yuhuashi), velvet, imitations of ancient ivory carving and wood carvings.
 
If you would like to take some delicacies to your friend, the sausage, Salted Duck, small peanut and Rain Flower Tea then are the first choice. They can be purchased in most of the supermarkets.
 
Wood Carvings
Originated in the New Stone Age, Nanjing wood carving works are primarily round carvings, full of strong and powerful styles with primitive simplicity. It includes the imitation wood carving and boxwood carvings. The former is plain in color, with the horse and Buddha's carving as the main pattern. The latter mainly depicts animals and figures.
 
Rain Flower Pebble (Yuhuashi)
Rain Flower Pebble is originally found in the area of Yuhua Terrace and is a popular traveling gift from Nanjing. The pebble is the complex of quartz, agate and opal. It is polished and made into diverse crafts such as earrings, pendants, bracelets and other handcrafts. Those exquisitely polished, can be as expensive as other more famous gems. Many of those pebbles carry a legend or a fantastic story.
 
Velvet
Velvet is a material which is traditionally made and crafted in Nanjing. There are two main types of velvet produced in the region: silk velvet and silk-floss velvet. This velvet is used in tapestry, cushions, rugs, clothing and upholstery. There are numerous shops near Gulou roundabout on Hunan Lu where you can purchase good quality velvet.
 
Cloud-Pattern Brocade
The origin of Nanjing cloud-pattern brocade can be traced back to 1,500 years ago. It used to be the brocade that was reserved only for the emperors and the royal family members in the dynasties of Yuan, Ming and Qing. It, together with the Song Brocade from Suzhou and Shu Brocade from Sichuan, are reputed as the Three Most Famous Brocade in China. In Qing Dynasty, Nanjing cloud-pattern brocade reached the zenith of its development. At that time, there were more than 30,000 looms with nearly 300,000 workers engaging in this trade. At present, the brocade is not only made into top clothes, but also is processed into rugs, cushions, bedcovers, handbags, ties, etc.

Nanjing, like other typical Chinese city, has a huge selection of bars, pubs, karaoke and discosThey are mainly located around the Fuzimiao zone. There are also various arcades, bowling alleys, pool halls and cinemas. Numerous "Western style" bars are dotted in the city but the best ones are around the universities which has a great student and teaching population (foreign and Chinese). These bars are frequently provided with draught beer and pub games like pool or darts, and its clientele are both locals and foreigners.

Air:

NanjingLukouInternationalAirport is located in the southeast outskirts of the city, about 35km from the downtown area. The Nanjing airport has regular daily connections to all major Chinese cities. It offers 85 air routes to over 50 cities, including Hong Kong, Macau, Bangkok, Singapore, and Seoul. In 2007, Nanjing airport handled 8.037 million passengers and ranked 10th busiest by cargo traffic and 14th busiest both by passenger traffic and traffic movements in China. Shuttles between the airport and downtown area cost 25 RMB for one person. Most of the 4 and 5 star hotels in Nanjing all have their own bus to the airport.
 
Train:
Nanjing has three passenger railway stations. Located in the north of Nanjing city, Nanjing Railway Station was originally built in 1968 and reconstructed in 2002. The majority of passenger trains coming in and out of Nanjing run through this station. From Nanjing Station it is possible to travel in any direction within China to cities including Beijing, Shangahi, Xi’an, Guangzhou, etc. Now, a new railway station, namely Nanjing South Station is under construction. It is officially claimed the largest railway station in Asia after it is finished in 2012.
 
Subway
The subway line runs through the city from north to south with 16 stops, including many tourist spots of the city. The ticket price is CNY 2 for the first eight stops and CNY 1 for every four additional stops.
 
The subway has provides not only convenient transportation but there is a great marketplace located underground and there are stops at the major shopping malls in the Xinjiekou area and at almost all the bus stops in the area covered by the line. Passengers can easily change between the two transport networks. Conveniences such as access for the disabled, telecom signals, electronic guide screens, and navigation signals make traveling by subway in Nanjing comfortable as well.
 
Public Bus
Public buses cover nearly every corner of the city but the names on the signposts at the stops can be confusing for foreigners. If you can, have someone write down the destination you want to go in Chinese characters on a piece of paper and take it with you. There's no conductor on public buses and you need to put CNY 1 into the money box when you get on, so be sure to carry small change with you. For air-conditioned buses, the fare is CNY 2.
 
Boat
Nanjing has a developed river transportation system and passenger ships for the following destinations depart on a regular schedule: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chongqing (5 days) and Wuhan (2 days). The length of the journey varies depending on the type of boat you travel on. This is a lovely way to travel between some of the more popular spots but it can be tiring and time consuming. The port in Nanjing is on the western side of Zhongshan Road North.
 
Taxi:
There are more than 9,000 taxis in Nanjing. Most of the taxies running in the road are Fukang, Red Flag, KIA, Jetta, Santana, etc. Except in no parking zone, taxis can be hailed easily on the street. In Nanjing, all the taxis have meters. The fare is 9 RMB (including 1 RMB fuel fee) for the first 3 km and 2.4 RMB for each additional kilometer.
