Yichang Overview

Yichang is located at southwest of Hubei province, and is a prefecture-level city in Hubei province .Yichang lies where the middle and upper reaches of Yangtze river meet , and is the place where the magnificent Three Gorge Dam located.Yichang covers 21,000 square kilometers with a population of 4.15 million in which 1.33 million are urban people.Yichang lies at the intersection of Hubei, Chongqing and Hunan province ,and is also know as "gate of Three Gorge Dam" ,"throat of Sichuan and Hubei province". For its specific location, Yichang has long been the major transit port and distribution center of goods.

Climate: Yichang has a humid subtropical monsoon climate with abundant rainfall in summer. The city enjoys four clear seasons with cloudy and sunny springs, hot and humid summers, pleasant autumns and dry winters. The average annual rainfall is 1198 mm , mainly from June to July .annual temperature is 13.1℃~18℃.

Tujia is the largest minority ethnic group in Yichang. There diets are quite characteristic. The moon-shaped glutinous rice and Oil tea soup are traditional specialty of the Tobias. Tujia women are good at weaving, and the Tujia brocades, also called "Xilankapu," are practical works of art. All of those regional specialties can be found in the Autonomous county of Tujia or major shopping areas in Yichang.

Flight

The Yichang Sanxia Airport: There are flights connecting the city with more than 20 domestic destinations including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Shenzhen, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Yunnan, Hunan, Chongqing, Shandong, Guangxi, Sichuan and Henan.

 
Railway
The railway station lies in the centre of the city. Trains link other big cities including Beijing, Xi'an, Wuhan and Zhengzhou.
 
Cruise
The Yangtze River runs through this city, so taking a cruise ship in Yichang is a good way to enjoy the view along the Yangtze River and is very popular among the travelers. Luxury ships berth at Yichang Port. You can also take the ferry with a fare around RMB 300- 400 .But remember, the ferry leaves the port once a day, get ready beforehand.

From 06:00 to 23:00, the flag-down price is¥5 for the first 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) and¥1.2 per extra kilometer (0.6 mile). And in the night (23:00-06:00 the next day), the flag-down price rises to¥6.4 for the first 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) and ¥1.6 per extra kilometer (0.6 mile).

Yichang is an ancient city with a history over 2700 years, and was a famous battlefield throughout the Three Kingdoms Period. Yichang is also considered as the cradle of ancient Ba culture and the birthplace of ancient Chu culture. Yichang is the home town of first great Chinese poet with record, Qu Yuan, whom people commemorated on Duan Wu Festival. The Yangtze River runs through this city, creating many natural scenic spots along its path. The magnificent Three Gorges Dam locates on the Xiling Gorge, thus Yichang is also known as "pearl of Three Gorges". Besides Three Gorges Dam, there is another dam, Gezhouba Dam, which generates 15.7 Billion GWh of electricity annually. And the navigation lock No1 and No2, which are 19.7m in width, 34m in height, are among the largest in the world.
